Does anyone know where I can get a Switchmaster Actuator Midi Value VA1 | |
The Switchmaster is a blue box which clips onto the central heating, it has a white dial in the centre. I am not sure how old this is but noone seems to know anything about them or where I could get one from.

i have one on my system - dated 30/09/82 - hand written inside on the gearbox (beige elipse shaped unit behind the flat motor) and 1082 stamped in ink on the outside back metal plate.
mine's just started playing up. but a firm knock gets it turning. at the moment, i'm not sure if its the microswitches behind the raised platform supporting the gearbox/motor (there's a cam on the output shaft that activates one of the 3 microswitches to tell the controller the current position - hw, ch or hw+ch). or it could be the multipole relay - just like old car distributor contact breakers, they pit and can stick due to current flow causing an arc just as the make or break.
the motor is obviously 240vac mains powered, so a direct feed can be use to test it once the unit has been stripped down. the two back wires need to be de-soldered from the relay and the microswitches before testing. if it works continuously or full 360deg rotation with no problems then it must be the microswitches or relay.
240vac mains rated microswitches can be source easily from maplin, farnell, cpc (consumer farnell co.), rs components etc. and are inexpensive compared to replacing the whole water valve and switch gear.
the multipole relay is also very cheap in comparison.
with a bit or engineering and electronics skills, you could possibly find a replacement motor to drive/turn the "d" shaped drive shaft that locates on the water valve.
i'm still investigating all this so i've not got actual part codes etc. yet.
hope this helps.
